Russia’s Trade with Japan
In the 1st quarter of 2021, Russia’s trade with Japan was $3,875,524,877, down 9.20% ($392,615,638) from the 1st quarter of 2020.
Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2021 were $1,919,840,247, down 21.64% ($530,233,741) from the 1st quarter of 2020.
Russia’s imports from Japan in the 1st quarter of 2021 totaled $1,955,684,630, up 7.57% ($137,618,103) from the 1st quarter of 2020.
Russia’s trade balance with Japan went from a surplus of $632,007,461 in the 1st quarter of 2020, to a deficit of $35,844,383 in the 1st quarter of 2021.
Japan was Russia’s 12th largest trading partner in the 1st quarter of 2021 (down from 9th in the 1st quarter of 2020), accounting for 2.5075% of Russia’s total trade (down from 3.0028% in the 1st quarter of 2020).
Japan was Russia’s 13th largest export market in the 1st quarter of 2021 (just as in the 1st quarter of 2020), accounting for 2.0810% of Russia’s total exports (down from 2.7535% in the 1st quarter of 2020).
Japan was Russia’s 8th largest supplier in the 1st quarter of 2021 (down from 7th in the 1st quarter of 2020), accounting for 3.1392% of Russia’s total imports (down from 3.4201% in the 1st quarter of 2020).
Russia’s Exports to Japan
The major share of Russian exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2021 (and in the 1st quarter of 2020) was accounted for the following product types:
- Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 59.74% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (75.83% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
- Precious metals and stones (HS code 71) - 15.24% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (9.84% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
- Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 13.65% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.59% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
- Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 4.93% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (5.29% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
- Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 4.19% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.52% in the 1st quarter of 2020);
- Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 1.67% of Russia’s total exports to Japan (1.20% in the 1st quarter of 2020).

- Natural or cultured pearls, precious or semi-precious stones,precious metals, metals clad with precious metal and articles thereof; imitation jewelry; coin (HS code 71) - an increase of $51,434,337;
- Fish and crustaceans, molluscs and other aquatic invertebrates (HS code 03) - an increase of $27,247,962;
- Cereals (HS code 10) - an increase of $9,889,615;
- Iron and steel (HS code 72) - an increase of $6,484,430.
The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Japan in the 1st quarter of 2021 over the 1st quarter of 2020 were recorded for the following product groups:
