Russia’s Trade with Australia

In the 2nd quarter of 2021, Russia’s trade with Australia totaled $259,895,643, up 28.24% ($57,231,525) from the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Russia’s exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2021 totaled $77,497,293, up 143.92% ($45,725,635) from the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Russia’s imports from Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2021 totaled $182,398,350, up 6.73% ($11,505,890) from the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Russia’s trade deficit with Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2021 was $104,901,057, a 24.60% decrease ($34,219,745) over the 2nd quarter of 2020.

Australia was Russia’s 69th largest trading partner in the 2nd quarter of 2021 (just as in the 2nd quarter of 2020), accounting for 0.1373% of Russia’s total trade (down from 0.1661% in the 2nd quarter of 2020).

Australia was Russia’s 81st largest export market in the 2nd quarter of 2021 (up from 89th in the 2nd quarter of 2020), accounting for 0.0674% of Russia’s total exports (up from 0.0454% in the 2nd quarter of 2020).

Australia was Russia’s 49th largest supplier in the 2nd quarter of 2021 (down from 47th in the 2nd quarter of 2020), accounting for 0.2458% of Russia’s total imports (down from 0.3281% in the 2nd quarter of 2020).

Russia’s Exports to Australia

The major share of Russian exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2021 (and in the 2nd quarter of 2020) was accounted for the following product types:

  • Chemical products (HS codes 28-40) - 44.20% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (43.84% in the 2nd quarter of 2020);
  • Wood and wood products (HS codes 44-49) - 24.02% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (11.23% in the 2nd quarter of 2020);
  • Mineral products (HS codes 25-27) - 18.26% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (20.90% in the 2nd quarter of 2020);
  • Machinery, equipment and vehicles (HS codes 84-90) - 5.79% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (7.65% in the 2nd quarter of 2020);
  • Metals and products from them (HS codes 72-83) - 4.21% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (4.99% in the 2nd quarter of 2020);
  • Food products and agricultural raw materials (HS codes 01-24) - 2.02% of Russia’s total exports to Australia (8.80% in the 2nd quarter of 2020).

  • Inorganic chemicals; organic or inorganic compounds of precious metals, of rare-earth metals,of radioactive elements or of isotopes (HS code 28) - an increase of $2,817,529;
  • Aluminum and articles thereof (HS code 76) - an increase of $1,126,191;
  • Optical, photographic, cinematographic, measuring, checking, precision, medical or surgical instruments and apparatus; parts and accessories thereof (HS code 90) - an increase of $775,219;
  • Nickel and articles thereof (HS code 75) - an increase of $554,279;

The largest declines in Russia’s exports to Australia in the 2nd quarter of 2021 over the 2nd quarter of 2020 were recorded for the following product groups:

  • Animal or vegetable fats and oils and their cleavage products prepared edible fats; animal or vegetable waxes (HS code 15) - a decrease of $637,336;
  • Beverages, spirits and vinegar (HS code 22) - a decrease of $555,179;
  • Organic chemicals (HS code 29) - a decrease of $321,421.
